7 Signs of Breast Cancer That Aren’t A Lump

Breast cancer can be incredibly dangerous, and for this reason, it’s critical that women examine their bodies regularly to look for irregularities and issues that could be symptomatic of breast cancer. Remember, there is no substitute for professional examination and testing. However, you should always self-screen yourself to catch the early signs.

Lumps and bumps are what women are taught to look for because they are the most frequent sign of early breast cancer. However, Women’s Imaging experts warn that there are other symptoms which can be related to the same condition which fewer women are aware of. Take the time today to self-examine yourself and protect your well-being before going through an MRI and other forms of cancer testing.

Breast or Chest Pain

Pain in your breast or chest which isn’t obvious from an impact should be examined. Despite what you may have been taught as a child, pain isn’t normal. Typically, it’s symptomatic of an underlying condition, and if it fails to subside over a few days, you should consider seeing your family doctor or specialist to undergo visual and physical testing for breast cancer.

Pain in the Upper Back and Neck

It’s not only the breast and chest area where you can experience pain. Your breast is connected to your upper back and neckline, and therefore it’s not uncommon for pain to be transmitted and felt in surrounding areas. Although not the best indicator of breast cancer, when combined with other symptoms it can help women to self-screen themselves and decide to see a local physician who can give you further guidance.

Itching or Redness on the Chest

If you notice that you’re experiencing abnormal itching and redness of the skin on the breast or chest region, then you should self-check yourself for any obvious bumps and request a mammogram. Redness can occur because of a variety of issues, and therefore you should think about any changes you’ve made to your beauty products, clothing, and washing ingredients before jumping to the assumption that its cancer.

It’s important to note that itching and redness are common in those with breast cancer and this may be experienced in surrounding areas and even in non-specific areas. This itching is when you can feel the irritations but can’t physically locate their location.

Changes in Breast Appearance

Throughout your life, your breasts can change significantly in shape, size, and appearance for a variety of reasons that aren’t related to cancer. These might include pregnancy, menopause, menstrual cycle and the foods or drinks that you eat. However, if you notice a sudden change that is abnormal for you, you should check them for lumps.

You know your body better than a doctor will, and therefore you should trust your own opinion on whether their appearance has changed substantially. If they have altered seriously, are painful to touch, or you can locate a bump or mass on them, you should contact a doctor for further evaluation and examination.

Changed Nipple Sensitivity or Appearance

As with the breast tissue, you might experience similar changes in the nipple itself. Puffiness, pulling inwards, retraction, and changes in colors could all be signs of breast cancer. However, you should note that these are less likely to be symptomatic of cancer than other signs on this list. If in doubt, check your breasts and nipples in different body positions like lying down, bending over and standing up to examine for other signs.

Thicker Breast Tissue

While you may not experience a significant bump or lump, it’s possible that you might feel a thickening of the breast tissue without being able to notice an obvious ball or cube shape. This thickened tissue, if abnormal for you, can be an early symptom of breast cancer and you should get a follow-up imaging or biopsy from your doctor.

Swelling in the Armpit

Lumps or swelling in the armpit should also cause concern. While not directly on the breasts, it’s not normal for you to have significant swelling or masses on the armpits, particularly if it’s only on one side of your body. If you do, you should book an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible to have it examined, imaged, and possibly to have a biopsy to test for cancer.

Take the Time to Check for These Signs

When it comes to your health, you are the number one advocate for yourself. Make sure that you check for these signs often, as they may be indicative that something is awry when it comes to your physical health. If you do ever experience any of these symptoms, schedule a visit with your doctor immediately. Even if you are unsure whether or not there is wrong, it is better to be cautious than to not do anything at all.
