If there’s one thing that’s going to spoil even the most flawless makeup, it’s dry, cracked, and chapped lips. Chapping doesn’t only look unsightly, it can also cause discomfort and pain. But while we all suffer dryness from time to time, a bit of care and attention can leave your pout looking and feeling luscious 24/7. Here’s how to get rid of chapped lips, and hopefully prevent them from returning!
1. Reach For The Moisturizer
The secret to soft and smooth lips is simple – regular hydration. Try an intensive lip treatment to boost moisture levels and kick-start the skin’s natural renewal process. Keep a purse-size version handy and use throughout the day and last thing at night to keep moisture levels topped up and your lips protected.
2. Watch Out For Products That Dry Your Lips
Some make-up products can actually cause chapped lips or make dryness appear worse, so always check the label! Mattifying and long-lasting lipsticks often have a waxy finish, which draws moisture away from the lips (these should only be worn when your lips are chap-free, as they’ll highlight the dryness). Opt for a moisturizing formulation, such as a gloss or sheer finish, or apply a layer of balm or petroleum jelly under your normal lip color.
3. Stay Out Of The Sun
Sun damage isn’t just evident on your face, it can also cause the skin on your lips to become dry and cracked. In the longer term, excessive sun exposure can cause fine lines, deep-set wrinkles, loss of collagen and even skin cancer. Stay out of the sun during the hottest times of the day (generally between 11am and 3pm), use a cover up such as a wide brimmed hat to keep your delicate skin in the shade, and layer on a good quality SPF – don’t just use it on your face, spread it on your lips too, or try a balm with added sun protection.
4. Protect Yourself From The Elements
Not just the sun, but the wind, rain and cold can also cause chapping and make dryness worse. Strong wind strips away at the fine, oily layers of protection that naturally occur in your skin – causing lips to dry out and become painfully chapped. Similarly, cold weather can cause your lips to become dry and cracked, so make sure to wrap up in a scarf. 5. Drink Lots Of Water
Your skin can only ever be as hydrated as the amount of water you take in – and that counts for your lips, too. Dry and cracked lips are one of the first signs of dehydration, so make sure you’re getting your daily dose of H2O. In normal weather, aim for a least six to eight glasses per day. If it’s hot or humid, or you’ve been doing some form of physical exercise, you’ll need to drink more.
6. Turn Off The Air Conditioning And Use A Humidifier
Dry climates are your skin’s worst enemy and will leave your skin dehydrated, your complexion dull, and your lips chapped and dry. Counteract the effects in your own home by investing in a humidifier, which adds much-need moisture into the air. It’s especially effective while you sleep.

7. Don’t Make It Worse
Picking at and peeling dry skin will only make your lips look and feel worse. Instead, limit the damage by using an intensive moisturizer, which will soften the existing dry patches on the outer layers and make them appear less noticeable.
