Missing Your Period is Not the Only Sign of Pregnancy



Getting pregnant is perhaps one of the happiest moments in the life of an expectant mother. If you are trying to get pregnant and feel that you might have conceived, some signs of pregnancy will certainly point to the happy news. Even though missing a period is typically among the most visible signs of pregnancy–it is not definitive. A pregnancy test followed by a blood test or an ultrasound is the only way to be sure that you are pregnant.

However, since ‘missing the period’ is still widely looked out for as a sign of pregnancy, some other signs will showcase if you are pregnant or not. Although, do note that the signs of pregnancy are different for every woman, mainly differing in duration, intensity, and frequency.

The signs of pregnancy other than a missed period:

1. Implantation Bleeding, Spotting, and Cramping

Even though it might seem like the start of your period, implantation bleeding can start as soon as the fertilised egg attaches itself to the wall of the uterus. Spotting can occur with minimal bleeding; however, some women may experience more blood than others which might make them believe it is their period. Although, be vigilant of heavy bleeding as it may be a sign of a miscarriage.

2. Noticeable Changes in Breasts

You might notice changes in your breasts that may appear as early as a week before missing your period. Breasts may become sore, tender, and heavy due to rising estrogen levels just after conception. There may be acute pain due to soreness. Areolas may darken and nipples may feel tingly or itchy too. Nevertheless, these signs are also associated with pre-menstrual changes in the breasts. However, these changes will stay in case of conception. So, remember your menstrual cycle, and if these breast changes stay after missing your period, a pregnancy is likely.

3. Fatigue

Typically, fatigue can develop anytime during pregnancy and is different for all women. The progesterone levels will rise after conceiving which will make you feel fatigued. Also, there may be higher production of blood with low blood pressure and blood sugar levels that will lead to the feeling of tiredness.

4. Morning Sickness

Nausea is among the first signs of pregnancy that most women face after conceiving. It typically surfaces every morning, hence why it is called as morning sickness. It may or may not couple with vomiting. However, not all women experience morning sickness, so if you are, it may be a sign of pregnancy. Morning sickness occurs due to the increased hormone levels that make the gastrointestinal process slower.

5. Frequent Urination

You may experience frequent urination as early as six to eight weeks after conception. It is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy and typically happens because of changes in hormone levels. You might even experience constipation due to a higher level of progesterone in your body as it causes the food to pass slower than usual. The constipated feeling may lead you to drink more water, resulting in frequent urination.

6. Mood Swings

Before even missing your period, you may start experiencing mood swings. Again, this is primarily due to changes in hormones. If you start experiencing intense mood swings, more than what you experience before your period, you may be pregnant.

If you are looking to get pregnant, you do not have to wait for a missed period. The signs of pregnancy mentioned above point towards pregnancy and must not be missed if you are planning to get pregnant.
