Do Eggs Need To Be Refrigerated?

It is known that eggs can last for about 3 to 5 weeks after you purchase them. Of course, it is important to keep them refrigerated. If you want to maximize the shelf life of eggs, we recommend you not to store them in the egg rack of the fridge door, because sometimes the temperature may be too warm in this part of the fridge. They will last longer if you store them in the main part of the fridge.

It is important to keep eggs in the carton in which they have been purchased. Also, you can refrigerate eggs without their shells. This way they will last in the fridge for 2 to 4 days. If you store boiled eggs in the fridge, they will last for up to one week.

If you want to further extend the shelf life of eggs, it is best to freeze them. But, you should never freeze eggs that are in their shells. You should remove the shells of eggs first. Then, pierce the yolks and mix one cup of raw eggs with a ½ teaspoon of salt, if you will use eggs for main dishes.

If you will use them for baking or for desserts, mix a cup of raw eggs with 1 tablespoon of sugar. After that, place the mixed eggs in airtight containers or in heavy-duty freezer bags and put them in the freezer. This way eggs will stay fresh for up to a year. You can also freeze the egg yolks and the egg whites separately and use them later for cooking or baking. You should never freeze hard boiled eggs.

Coconut Oil To Extend The Shelf Life of Fresh Eggs

Now we will show you another method how to extend the shelf life of fresh eggs, if their shells are not broken. You can simply extend the shelf life of eggs by using a coconut oil. Eggs must be dry and they must be stored at room temperature. You should melt coconut oil first, but you should not let it boil. Then dip eggs into the oil. After that let the eggs dry and store them in a dark and cool place.

Coconut Oil To Extend The Shelf Life of Fresh Eggs

Coconut oil creates a seal that can prevent oxygen to penetrate into the eggs. This way eggs can remain edible for about 9 to 12 months if stored at room temperature. If you store them in the fridge they may last even longer. Although coconut oil will extend the shelf life of eggs, there is one drawback of storing eggs this way. You should know that eggs after being oiled are not useful for cake making any more. Actually, egg whites will lose their foaming properties with the oiling, so they won’t whip up as fresh ones.

These are some of the ways how to extend the shelf life of eggs. You will easily notice if your eggs have gone bad. You should only crack open the egg and examine it. If the egg is still fresh it will have a bright yellow yolk and its white will be cloudy and thick. If the egg has gone bad, its yolk will be flat and its white will be watery. But, after reading this article, we are sure that you won’t let your eggs go bad.
