Some Dos and Don’ts for Healthier Living

Everyone wants to enjoy good health for a lifetime, but we don’t all necessarily want to make sensible choices to achieve it. We think eating healthy and exercising regularly will take too much time or be unenjoyable.

However, the truth is that a healthy lifestyle is fairly easy to achieve. All it takes is a commitment and daily decisions to treat our bodies well. Here are three things to strive for and three others to avoid to be healthy inside and out.

Good Food

Don’t think of healthy eating as a restrictive diet. Instead, look at the many ways you can select delicious, tasty, and nutritional foods that will actually make you look good and feel better.

Do these 3 things:

1. Eat a satisfying breakfast based on protein like eggs and cheese or a fiber-based carbohydrate such as oatmeal with fruit or wheat toast with peanut butter.

2. Include 5 fruits and vegetables each day. Fresh seasonal fruit and veggies along with juice and frozen produce for cooking will expand your menu palate while providing wholesome, filling nutrition for meals or snacks.

3. Sit down and relax while eating. Don’t rush through your meals. Take time to savor the foods’ textures, aromas, and tastes. Make healthy eating a pleasant experience.

Avoid these 3 things:

1. Limit empty calorie foods like potato chips and soda. When you must have them, enjoy a small portion. Filling up on non-nutritional foods makes you feel full and keeps you from eating healthier snacks and meals.

2. Stop eating at least two hours before bedtime. This gives your digestive system time to settle down so you can sleep better.

3. Stay away from harmful substances, like fatty foods, alcohol, drugs, and tobacco. Stick to wholesome, balanced meals utilizing the 5 food groups. (If you do overindulge on the drinking or drugs, don’t give up! Find a good outpatient substance abuse treatment program. Then restart.)

Regular Exercise

Experts claim that daily exercise helps the body and mind in many ways, from reducing blood pressure to eliminating stress. Here are some things to keep in mind when you exercise.

Do these 3 things:

1. Check with your doctor first to see if there any restrictions on the type or amount of exercise you want to do, such as walking, biking, swimming, etc.

2. Try to exercise 3 to 5 days per week. If you don’t feel well or have other commitments, it can wait. Otherwise, try to keep up with your exercise schedule.

3. Work out with a friend. Research shows exercise partners are more successful than individuals.

Avoid these 3 things:

1. Don’t overdo it. Some enthusiasts love the feeling of exercise and get carried away and become injured. Take your time.

2. Don’t make excuses. Some people get tired of exercising and give up. Keep at it, and you will soon look forward to each session.

3. Don’t forget to track your progress. Keep a journal of how long your sessions are and as your workout time and frequency increase you’ll have a record of it.

Taking better control of these two areas of your life will enable you to see results quickly.

In addition, nurture yourself by using quality products to keep your skin fresh and moist so it will not show signs of aging. Get regular dental checkups and consider whitening your teeth if they look yellowish or dingy. A bright smile reveals healthy teeth and makes you feel confident.

Making a few basic changes to your self-care each day can render amazing results. Get in shape and look your best to feel great.
